Episode 215
From Compliance to Curiosity in Schools
What Drives Children to Learn, and How Can Schools Nurture That Motivation?
Why do some children approach learning with curiosity and confidence while others disengage early in their educational journeys? How do classroom environments shape students’ motivation, and what role do teachers play in fostering a genuine love of learning? Can schools balance academic rigor with the emotional and developmental needs of young learners?
Deborah Stipek is the Judy Koch Professor of Education and former Dean of the Stanford Graduate School of Education. A developmental psychologist by training, her research focuses on early childhood education, student motivation, teacher quality, and education policy. She has advised policymakers at the highest levels, including serving as Deputy Director for Education at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
Her work bridges developmental science and educational practice, offering evidence-based insights into how schools can create environments where all children are motivated to learn and thrive.
In this episode, Deborah and I explore the foundations of student motivation and the critical importance of early childhood education. She explains how children’s beliefs about their abilities are shaped by classroom experiences and teacher expectations, often long before formal assessments begin. We discuss the impact of instructional practices, feedback, and school climate on students’ engagement and long-term achievement.
Our conversation also examines the broader policy landscape, including how education reforms can support or hinder effective teaching and equitable learning opportunities. Deborah shares insights into the challenges of translating research into practice and the importance of aligning policy decisions with developmental science.
This episode invites listeners to reconsider what it means to support children’s learning from the earliest years. It highlights the need for education systems that prioritize motivation, equity, and high-quality teaching, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to develop a lifelong love of learning.
