Episode 212

Schools on the Frontlines of Mental Health

How Can Schools Better Support the Mental Health and Well-Being of Young People?

What role should education play in nurturing emotional resilience and psychological well-being? How can schools address the growing mental health challenges faced by students today? And what would it look like to design learning environments that support the whole child rather than focusing solely on academic achievement?

Shashank V. Joshi, MD, is a Professor of Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Education at Stanford University. He is a leading expert in school mental health, suicide prevention, and adolescent development. Dr. Joshi also directs Stanford’s Triple Board Residency and holds leadership roles at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and the Stanford Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education.

His interdisciplinary work bridges medicine and education, focusing on how institutions can better support the emotional and psychological needs of young people.

In this episode, Shashank and I explore the growing importance of integrating mental health into educational systems. He discusses the challenges facing today’s youth, including rising rates of anxiety, depression, and stress, and explains why schools play a critical role in early identification, prevention, and support. Our conversation highlights how educators, clinicians, and policymakers can collaborate to create environments that foster resilience, belonging, and well-being.

We also examine the cultural, developmental, and systemic factors that shape student mental health. Dr. Joshi shares insights into how educational institutions can move beyond reactive approaches toward proactive, compassionate models of care. From promoting psychological safety to rethinking the relationship between academic pressure and well-being, this discussion underscores the importance of supporting students as whole human beings.

This episode invites listeners to reconsider the purpose of education in the modern world. It challenges us to imagine systems that prioritize not only intellectual growth but also emotional health, empathy, and human flourishing.
