Alternative Learning Through Ultimate Frisbee for Tribal Communities: One All

What does Ultimate Frisbee teach us about equality, empathy, and life skills?

How can a sport foster communication, inclusion, and self-confidence in marginalized communities? Can the rules of the game be a metaphor for building a just and equitable world?

Today’s guest is Varsha Yeshwant, co-founder of One All, an organization that combines Ultimate Frisbee with life skills education to empower children and youth in India. From engineering to photojournalism, and finally to sports-driven social change, Varsha has carved a unique path that blends her love for storytelling with her passion for creating meaningful impact. Through One All, Varsha works with marginalized communities, particularly indigenous tribes in Tamil Nadu, teaching critical life skills through sport.

In this episode, we explore Varsha’s incredible journey from falling in love with Ultimate Frisbee to building an organization that uses it as a tool for change. One All's curriculum teaches young people how to navigate life’s complexities with empathy and resilience. Varsha discusses the challenges of convincing communities about the importance of life skills and explains how the sport’s unique rules—like self-refereeing and inclusivity—reflect real-life values of fairness and collaboration.

We delve into the transformative effects of One All’s programs, from indigenous youth finding their voice to women reclaiming their confidence through physical activity. Varsha also shares how creating a safe space for self-expression has empowered young people to challenge societal norms and reclaim their dignity. This conversation highlights the profound potential of alternative education models and their ability to address gaps in traditional schooling.
